Casting is a process that can be done using many types of materials. In almost all cases the material is a liquid, or semi-liquid, which is then poured into a mold. The mold contains the reverse of the desired shape of the finished piece. The material fills and conforms to the shape of the mold.

Once the liquid has sufficiently hardened in the mold (by cooling, drying, or completing a chemical transition), the mold is then removed in order to release the work piece.

The mold itself can either be reuasble or expendable. Each material, process, and the number of parts to be made can lead to very different methods of production.
